Café D’Mongo’s Speakeasy
An irreplaceable downtown last stop: strong drinks, tiny bathrooms, live music, grilled cheese, and absolutely no chance of a boring night.
Cafe D’Mongo’s is too special to explain cleanly. I’d always heard the room was once a brothel; the documented history points instead to a Greek chili restaurant, so call that one D’Mongo’s lore. Either way, the room is strange, joyful, and always humming; a band is usually crammed into the corner turning classic rock and Motown into a singalong. The drinks are strong, the energy is high, and the whole thing works precisely because nowhere else feels like it.
Make it the last stop on the train.
You want a late-night Detroit institution, live music, strong drinks, and a story to take home.
You want quiet conversation, personal space, delicate cocktails, or an early night.
